New Zealand National Literature Exhibition

Held under the Patronage of the New Zealand Philatelic Federation
Palmerston North, 25 June 2005

by
Norman Banfield

Jury Report:

The judging team (Robin Gwynn FRPSL FRPSNZ (chairman), Norman Banfield FRPSNZ, Steven McLachlan, David Smitham, Graham Muir (apprentice), Judith Sidaway (apprentice)) thanks the organisers for their initiative in holding this exhibition, the entrants for their willingness to make their knowledge and research available to others, and the Philatelic Foundation, Christchurch, for the use of their premises for judging. Philatelic literature is vital for the well-being of the hobby, and the large entry recorded here shows it is in good health.

Entries were judged in accordance with the NZ Philatelic Federation mark sheets. Following past precedent, we considered Felicitations only for entries concerning the Pacific region, and were pleased to award them for the bibliographical research behind entry 27. Four entries were adjudged hors concours as outside the competition's scope or rules, 39 as a commercial sales production, 45 as non-philatelic, and 63 and 70 because the minimum of a year's production of these periodicals was not submitted. Robin Gwynn took no part in judging entries 28 and 64, Norman Banfield in judging no. 76, and Graham Muir in judging no. 6.

Awards were made between bronze and large gold standards. The Grand Award was awarded to Joseph Chalhoub of Canada for The Nile Post Handbook and Catalogue of Egyptian Stamps (no.29), and the Grand Award Runner-up to Vaccari srl of Italy for the Ethiopian trilogy by Roberto Sciaky (no.15). Special prizes were awarded to John Heath of the UK for Mexico - the 1868 Issue (no.24), and to the Royal Philatelic Society London for The London Philatelist (no.71) as best periodical.
